Cheesecake Recipes

Eaten by ancient Greeks and then by the Romans, cheesecake has been around for a very long time. This popular dessert is made two ways: either baked or unbaked, and each one of these recipes comes in various styles. Depending on the region where the cheesecake is made, dictates the style of this dessert. Of the two recipes, the baked cheesecake is considered a classic dessert all over North America.

In North America there are several types of cheesecake recipes, but the most commonly known is the New York style cheesecake. This big apple dessert has a base of heavy cream and egg yolks, which makes it extremely rich. Also, this cheesecake is baked in a special tall spring form pan that creates an extra thick slice of cake. Some of the New York versions use cottage cheese rather than cream cheese, and it is usually drizzled with chocolate sauce or topped with strawberries.

Another regional favorite is the Philadelphia style cheesecake. This recipe is richer than the New York, yet has a light texture. Other variations of cheesecake are sour cream, country style, and the Dutch style. Sour cream is a great alternative to heavy cream in this recipe because it helps cheesecakes to freeze better. The country style makes use of buttermilk which gives the cake a firm texture. As for the Dutch cheesecake, it is tangy on taste because of the use of farmer's cheese.

Although some recipes claim to be cheesecake, there are desserts that only implement cream cheese into the topping. One such recipe is the gooey butter cake generally found in St. Lois. This dessert has a base layer of regular cake with a cheesecake like topping. For those that are lactose intolerant, there are various non dairy recipes that will produce a great cheesecake that tastes just as good as one made with dairy.

Cheesecake is such a big favorite in the U.S. that there is a National Cheesecake Day. This unofficial holiday is celebrated on July 30th, and has grown in popularity over the past few years. Deliciously decadent, cheesecake is a dessert that can be served any time of the year, and is sure to satisfy everyone's sweet tooth.
